MessageWith comments like "it was better before" there's bound to no
progress... ;-)

Anyway, Windows has basically looked and felt the same since win95, and
since you sort of dropped out on windows with at win3.1-times you missed the
boat so to speak. I understand that there is a huge treshold to pass, so
maybe a class dealing with a modern windows OS may be appropriate.

As for PDF, I think you should have a look at the freeware PDF creator aptly
named "PDFCreator" available at
https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=57796. IIRC it should
be able to handle your odd-size booklets.

BTW, your initial posting seem to really have dropped in like a bomb on this
list! 8-D

WinXP/2k3)

I was on W3.1 on a 486 in 1989! I have no trouble with 2000 for basic tasks!
I just like to wring all I can out of it! When referring to Folder and file
concepts, I was commenting on the creation of things like "My Documents,
recyle bin" etc. I like to create my own organization and not be driven by
someone else's concepts! I miss the good ole "XTREE" where could sort and
split screens to make sure I didn't have duplicate files. Of course that was
preGUI! Editing of text files is a pain! I was used to Qedit where I could
sort, block columns, etc. for specialized documents. PDF files are a pain, I
have one on the computer now which I am unable to print in the format that I
would like! It is defined as a landscape document and I want it to be in
portrait format. I use a program called Clickbook that allows me to create 5
1/2 x 8 1/2 booklets, on both sides and PDFs are complex to print with it.
One shouldn't have to go to classes. I am not of the opinion that each
interation of Windows is an improvement! I'm not about to shell out Boo Coo
shillings to be able to edit PDF files. Also locking a system into having to
have it online all the time is crock. Not everyone can afford DSL, etc.

Just a humble opinion of a retired Computer Systems analyst who defined
criteria for data entry software for the military! It's nice to find
someplace where I can express my thoughts! Anyhoo I'm fumbling along.

Cheers,

I agree with you on Wizards, they suck.

Folder and file concepts really have nothing to do with Gates.

I think you need a class. There really isn't anything difficult about
using Windows 2000 for basic tasks, unless you are trying to force your 1989
concepts on a 1999 operating system in 2006.

What platform did you work on in 1989?

VBG, I didn't really need all the bells and whistles that came with the
later version of Windows, plus my old 486 was supporting me fine, until I
could no longer use email, running out of processor room! Then through a
stroke of luck I came into posssession of a Compaq "Prosignia Desktop" with
Windows 2000 installed and a megabyte hard drive and sound system. It was
like being in seventh heaven. I'm retired and now I'm spending all my time
on the PC. When it comes to computers I don't consider myself a newbie, it
is just that I haven't kept up with the technology, but in hardware and
software! I'm extremely disappointed in the way software is designed today.
It is no longer intuitive and so complex one needs a road map to navigate.
Each software designer and programmer believes that their bread and butter
depends upon how fancy they can be, especially with the GUI. I also dislike
the WIZARD interfaces. Gates and companies folder and file concept sucks. I
believe in the KISS principle!

    Enough of my comments!

I can see from the Juno account that you are a serious newbie. What
can we do to help? Really I would like to know how you got by all these
years without Windows 95, 98, 98 SE, WinME, Windows NT, and skipped right to
2000 which is now 6 years old and been replaced by XP. Where have you been
for 15 years? Sounds sort of Rip van Winkleish.

        Is this list active!

I upgraded recently from W3.1 to W2000 and miss some of the
capabilities
of the old 3.1. For example I now have a screenful of icons on the
Desktop! I've been looking for ways to subgroup some of them so I
don't
have to have them all showing! Gate's and company have not really
improved Windows, but merely making it more difficult to use.
