This looks promising.  Thanks Mark.  You were the only one who actually 
understood that I wasn't looking for a protocol replacement here, just a 
container for my sessions.  :)

It does for RDP sessions what tabbed browsing does for web pages.  You can 
customize each session, including the port.

Their old version 1.5 was free, and I am still using it.  Their latest is $69.

Hi group,

 

I cannot remember the name of some small freeware product that I used a few 
years back that was similar to the remote desktops snapin for the MMC, but 
better.  Any ideas?  I just installed the latest (only?) version of this 
snapin, and still no support for alternate ports.  Weak!
