Ray,

You're DSL modem is acting like a layer 2 bridge, it in fact does not have
an IP address that you can access. DSL uses ATM PVC's to connect back to
your ISP usually, and you're computer establishes a link through this at a
layer lower than what IP operates at. Cable modems work similarly, they're
basically bridges and share a lot of properties with Ethernet on the cable
end.

Are you talking about static IP addresses on your own network or out in the
world? Like, my configuration at home is as such:

DSL moden plugs into WAN port on Router
Router has 123.123.123.123 for WAN or other such Internet IP address as
assigned by my ISP.
Router has 192.168.0.1 for LAN IP address
Servers and workstations are 192.168.0.2-254

Ray at work

p.s. And now I'm confused as I sit here thinking about it. Wouldn't it
actually be the DSL modem that has the WAN IP address? But I know that I
specify my WAN ip address in my router's configuration.
