Rod,

In order for mail for a particular domain to be delivered, the sending
server queries the DNS server that holds the Destination Domain for a list
of MX records. This record basically says "When you want to deliver email
to this domain, contact these servers in this order"

What you need to do is this:
1. Set up and install the Exchange Internet Mail Service. I have not used
Exchange 2K yet, so can't advise you on this step.
2. Create inbound, port 25 access to your mail server from the internet.
This could involve static NAT, port mappings, port forwarding, etc.
3. Determine the external address of your mail server.
4. From the outside world, telnet to this outside address on port 25. when
connected, type the word "HELO" If you get a response, you are on the right
track.
5. Contact the people who manage your external DNS and ask them to create a
new A record called "mail.domain.com" or something similar, and point it to
the IP address from step 3. Also, make sure that they create a Reverse DNS
entry for the IP address, or some mail servers will refuse mail from your
server.
6. Ask them to create a new MX record that points to the A record from step
5. They may have to juggle the priority numbers on the other MX records to
make yours have the highest priority.
7. Wait for DNS propagation, and cross your fingers...

Subject: [windows2000] Setting up Exchange to work with the Internet

I've asked for some help on this before, but I would like some additional
information about it. Basically what I want to do is set up our Exchange
2000 Server to work as a regular email server on the Internet. When I've
asked on this list before, I was told that I have to contact our ISP and get
them to put a "MX" record into ??? What, exactly? And once they do that,
what am I supposed to do? Do I put an MX record somewhere in Exchange, so
that it can reciprocate? Basically, how do I set all of this stuff up?

I'm sure that I could read about this, too, but without knowing exactly what
it is I am doing, I don't know what to look for in the online documentation.

Thanks.

Rod
