i think when you reinstall sql on a machine that the name has changed and
sql was already there, it only changes a couple of registry entries. At
least that was the way i understood v2000 to work :)

As long as you do the rename before you install SQL. Renaming a SQL server
requires a SQL re-install.

Good luck,

Subject: [windows2000] Replacing/Renaming a server

I have a server named Server1 that I am replacing. I have the new =
server I am replacing it with that evewntually needs to become Server1.

Server1 is a member server in an Windows 2000 domain with Active =
Directory in place and running well. MS SQL Server 7 is currently =
running on Server1

I would like to bring the new server up as Server2 and get it loaded up =
and patched etc. Can I then just turn off the old server and rename the =
new one to that name or is there more to it than that?

Thanks!

Greg
