I think you're thinking of RAID 0. RAID 0 is a stripe set, and RAID 1 is a
mirror set. In the mirror set, you are writing to both disks but only ever
reading from 1. The second drive is used in case the first one fails. In
RAID 0, you are striping, or writing different stripes of data across 2 or
more disks. That's where you get the performance.

Anyone who's interested, check out http://www.acnc.com/04_01_00.html for a
pretty good explanation of the different types of RAID.

Not necessarily... With RAID 1, you have two drive to read from. Not = one.
A 3 Drive RAID five, your effectively reading off of 2 spindles = for data
and one for parity (yes the parity is distributed, but the = point is 2 of
the 3 disk reads are data.) With RAID 5, you need atleast = 4-5 spindles to
gain a perfomance increase over RAID 1. By that time, =
you could do RAID 1+0 instead. A DC isn't going to require alot of =
disk space. RAID 1 is also cheaper that RAID 5 and has the same fault =
tolerance as RAID 5.

I disagree. In a RAID 1 setup your max throughput is the speed of a =
single drive. In RAID 5, it will almost always be higher is you have even 3
drives, because of the striping across all three. When you account for =
the overhead of writing the parity info, you still get slightly higher
throughput than a RAID 1 setup. This performance increases with the =
number of drives you add to the stripe.

RAID 1, for fault-tolerance and speed. Raid 1 will be faster than raid =
=3D 5.

The AD database will not grow large enough that you will need multiple = =3D
disks and form a raid 5 subset... But if you do, and you get yourself a =
=3D decent controller you could always convert from Raid 1 to 5 on the fly.

Building a 2000 DC in a pristine domain. What would most of you =3D =
recommend on=3D20 the DC for fault tolerance, RAID 1 or RAID 5 and why?
