[windows2000] Re: Print Spooler Dead

Hi Greg

We are having the same problem I think. It started after the SP4 install on our
Win2K DC acting as a print server.

We applied the MS hotfix (820550:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=820550) which consisted of 3
files: localspl.dll, spoolss.dll and win32spl.dll. But this did not fix the
problem.

We then rolled back to SP3, but the problem was still there. We then noticed
this MS article (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=822384)
detailing problems with some hotfixes, this one included and SP4. So we
reapplied the hotfix hoping it would help this time. Unfortunately not.

We also tried clearing out the spool directory but this made no difference.

MS say they will charge us for any more help they give. When I know it worked
fine before SP4 and was broken after applying it, I am a little annoyed that MS
want to charge me!

The only solution we currently have is to move all the printers to another
server and then manually load the new printers onto each user's system. It's a
pain in the butt with 50 users, and if you have more you might want to look at
other solutions. Our spooler was dying every 3-4 minutes and taking 2 mins to
restart, so we had to take drastic action.

Hope something in here helps!
Kev

I have tried reinstalling SP4 and I just got a hotfix from MS. Hopefully the
hotfix will work because reinstalling SP4 did nothing. If the hotfix fails I
will give this a shot.

I am starting to suspect that one of my users is submitting a corrupt job but it
seems a little far-fetched that it would cause this much trouble.

Hi Greg

Have you tried copying a new spoolsv.exe onto the machine over the top? I
know it's not elegant but I have had a prob kind of like this (slightly
different errors) on a TS server and it seemed to do the job? I think the
actual app had got screwed somehow.

Worth a try?

Cheers
Dan

When I came in this morning my print server has been refusing to print.

I have the following "helpful" errors in the event log:

The Print Spooler service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 5
time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 0 milliseconds:
No action.

The server service was unable to map error code 1727.

The application, spoolsv.exe, generated an application error The error
occurred on 10/21/2003 @ 09:03:10.376 The exception generated was c0000005
at address 76A87199 (WritePort)

I checked out Q199915 but I don't have Jet Direct loaded on this server (or
any other server). All my printers are setup as a standard tcpip port.
Nothing has changed on the server. It is Windows 2000 SP4 with hotfixes.
None of the printers are new, everything has been running fine for a long
time. I did reboot it for good measure and I am currently searching MS and
google for clues but none so far.

Has anyone seen this before? The spool directory is empty and it seems to
work for a few minutes and then die again.

Greg
