Yeah the technology isnt cheap if starting from scratch. But the winner this
particular client saw was the ability of growth long term without having to
ripout server infrastructure. Also capacity planning was easier.

He was using the traditional DAS solutions that most sites use. But found he
had lots of unused diskspace across his server infrastructure. And with his
pending migration project now was a good time to migrate to a SAN. We just
added in fiber HBA's into his existing servers and move the data to the SAN.

Not sure if server leasing is big where you are but over here its common, so it
works in well with his leasing plan.

We couldn't justify the IBM SAN here. We found a nice little starter
SAN from HP for a fraction of the cost. It's SCSI instead of fiber
channel but will serve our needs well enough.

it was a tough call to make because we are an all IBM shop.

the IT manager loved about the SAN concept in this case is that he could just
add in a disks as required and allocate data to the servers and services that
needed it. No major downtime and reconfiguration required.
