Micron ships laptops on many BPA agreements to the Fed Gov with Serial > USB adapters, and most devices I attempted to use worked. I own one from Belkin that I found on Craig's list for $8, and it works for the things I've tried..

I've heard about those... I know there are tons of them out there... but
I've been told that there are some compatibility problems between
USB-->serial devises and their attached devices. Has anyone here used
them, and if so, have you had any problems using null modem adapters
with them?

For example, we have a paging system that can only be programmed via
its com port, that we've always had to connect to a Gateway laptop with
a serial port, using a null modem adapter on the line.

Forgive me, I don't have too much knowledge on serial connections /
null modem connections at all. :-(

Doesn't matter too much if serial ports are built in on systems or not
these days...

communication

I'm looking for a laptop for someone who is a network administrator.
He
takes his laptop everywhere he goes... weight isn't a huge issue, he's
fairly hefty and is used to carrying around a laptop, camera, zip
drive,
barcode scanner, and a ton of accessories.

Thus far, folks seem to be leaning toward the Inspiron 5160 or 8600.
The problem is, they don't appear to have a serial port on board. Does
anyone have any experience with either the laptops, to have
suggestions
with them, or with serial PCMCIA cards? He needs the serial port(s) so
that he can connect to cisco/3com switches for programming, via null
modem to the Bogen paging system, etc.

So... any advice on, or experience with, either the laptops or a way
to
handle serial communication? Thanks in advance!

Andrew
