It will be acting as a glorified repeater. I will probably use the =
unused ports for a couple of print servers we have and some key =
personnel. If the ports are there, may as well use them.

The devices at the end of this chain will be a 802.11B access point, a =
network printer, and three thin client terminals. Maybe another =
access point down the road, but that's it for now. There will be four =
wireless webpads that connect to the wireless for Citrix.

They are pretty good here about doing things right. At the same time, =
wiring fiber and the related equipment for a printer and some thin =
clients is overkill when I can do it with our existing wiring and two =
$40 Linksys switches.

I may have to take a look at the cost of replacing the hub with one =
large switch. That certainly sounds cleaner.

I wouldn't say that the way he's going to use it is the wrong way, it
depends on his environment. Now if he was going to be stringing servers =
off
of that end switch, then he really should think about a different =
solution.
If 100Mb will fill his bandwidth requirements for that end switch then =
he's
fine. =20

One thing I should clarify though, when I originally mentioned that a
repeater would have little benefit and a switch would be better I was
assuming he was replacing that hub with a switch. In this situation the
switch will be acting as a glorified repeater. This is assuming that =
the
switch will only be serving as a middle man and the other ports are not
going to be used.

Perhaps, you can try the chaining switches, but that may cause more =3D
problems than it solves.

You should approach management and tell them to do it right, or not at =
=3D
all.

Drop a fiber connection.

Subject: [windows2000] Networking Question

I have to figure out a way to get some additional network connections to =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D
a location in our building for a bunch of thin clients and wireless =
=3D3D
=3D3D3D3D
tablets. That location currently has one connection already. I need it =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D
to have about 8.=3D3D3D3D20

This location is about 400' from my main communications room where the =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D
main switch is located. To get the existing connection there, it goes =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D
through a hub which is right in the middle. =3D3D3D3D20

SWITCH ----200'----> HUB ----200'----> outlet.

I was thinking about adding a switch in with the hub for that connection =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D
then adding another switch at the end for all the extra devices I need.

SWITCH ----200'----> HUB
SWITCH ----200'----> SWITCH----200'----> outlet -> SWITCH =3D3D
=3D3D3D3D3D=3D3D3D3D3D>> =3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D
Devices

The hub is already full and all the new connections I need are in the =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D
same place. I have two runs of cable from the main switch to the hub =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D
but only one is used.

Am I inviting disaster by stringing that many switches together. Would =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D
it be better to use a repeaters or something rather than a switch?

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Greg
