They added a lot of the tab extension functionality into version 1.
Not as much power as some of the extensions for tabbed browsing but
some good basic stuff and no extension is required. Add this to your
user.js file:

// Reveal more tab/window options:
  user_pref("browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs", true);

You then get new options for tabbed browsing in preferences to force
links that normally open in a new window to open ina new tab.

You can then add this to user.js to allow new windows spawned by
javascript to make a new window like web polls and things otherwise
they will go in a new full tab with the above options set:

/* Force New Windows Restrictions
    0: Default - Divert *all* new windows to current tab/window or new tab
    1: Don't divert *any* windows spawned by JS
    2: Don't divert JS windows that include size/placement/toolbar info */
user_pref("browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction", 2);

This is all on the tips and tricks page.
