* INTERNET EASILY WEATHERS MASSIVE ATTACK
The Internet has been under a near-constant Distributed Denial of
Service (DDoS) attack since Monday but has withstood the attack
handily. DDoS attacks lob massive amounts of data at Internet-based
servers from numerous locations simultaneously, an often-crippling
event that makes the servers unreachable by real users. The current
attacks, described as the worst ever, are aimed at the 13 root DNS
servers that form the Internet's central address book. These servers
are located around the world, although most of them are in the United
States. Designated by the single letters A through M, the servers each
field hundreds of millions of domain name requests each day.

Curiously, the attacks have had barely any effect, with no outages and
few slowdowns. Matrix NetSystems reports that users' ability to reach
the core DNS servers dropped just 6 percent at the height of the
attack. The distributed nature of the Internet is part of the reason
the root DNS servers have responded so well, because the Internet
doesn't have a centralized design that can be attacked easily.
Although the root DNS servers form the Internet's logical core,
end-user machines rarely use them to locate Internet addresses because
ISPs' local DNS servers can serve customers more quickly.
