It was a while ago, if I remember it basically exported the doc to a txt
file. We had a very large document with a lot of formatting so it wasn't
very useful for us.

You might try saving as an html and then importing into a clean file.

Also, is there a large amount of text boxes, or text boxes with graphics
in them. I have narrowed down some problems we have had to be related to
the text box. Usually when they contain graphics.
