Forgot to include details:

1) Current number of users 50 (including remotes), expected to grow to
several hundred over the next few years
2) Data is mostly accounts containing data about student borrowers and
notes from our staff.  Both reads and writes are frequent.
3) Operating system will most likely be Redhat for the PostgreSQL and
Mandrake or win2k for the Oracle.
4) Organization is extremely sensitive to data loss
