All the more reason to pay attention to those blessed MS patches and
security notifications. I agree in an ideal world you would have a nice
firewall in front and behind but it isn't always that easy, but if you do
have an open web server then it must be up to date with patches etc.

I'd imagine there are many webservers that aren't behind a firewall and
are running SQL Server.  Sure, in an ideal environment you'd have a
firewall, then the Web server, and the SQL Server behind that, but when
cash doesn't allow for that, people will run IIS and SQL on the same
server sometimes not behind a firewall.
