Well Bob, I guess this will have to be a case of me having a story and sticking too it <g>.

Seriously though, I don't know how it works, or why it should, or shouldn't work. All I know is that it does. Being as familiar with the music I most often listen too, it would be hard not to notice a vast improvement. And I can assure you, that improvement isn't merely subjective. I'm no more capable of debating the technical issues you've presented than I would be the matter of the peculiarities of the sound card that one might be using to reproduce the results, but I can say with absolute certainty that my Creative SB Audigy B800's performance improves significantly when playing most if not all my mp3 files in 24 bit mode. I guess I can't blame you for being a bit skeptical, but all I can suggest is that you give it a chance, and if it doesn't do anything for you, then chuck it into a cyber hole never to be seen or heard from again <g>.

BTW, thanks for the educational input on the matter.

Take care,

Larry

HI larry. Jerry's question about 24-bit playback was not related to the encoding bitrate, IE 128/160/192, etc. Rather, he was referring to the bit resolution which, in almost every case is 16 bits which, in theory would mean that there would be nothing to be gained by playing a file with 16-bit resolution in 24-bit mode.

Jarrod,

You need to make sure that you have settings at 24 bit audio in both the Winamp playback options, as well as in the MAD configuration dialog box, and of course restart Winamp.

Someone brought up an interesting point. He was wondering how the 24 bit setting could make a difference with mp3 files encoded at 128 bit. I'm gonna take a listen to any files I can find encoded at that rate, and see how they strike me. But since I have downloaded most of my stuff from Usenet newsgroups, most of the files are encoded at 160kb and above, and that may definitely make the difference. But I can assure you, to say there is a difference would be an understatement. I wish you success.

Other issues have been brought out, such as how it works with the ML. I've heard that it is necessary to use the library in order to use the send to functions as it applies to the audio leveling options. If that's so, and MAD is incompatible with those functions, then there could be a problem. But after hearing the richness of 24 bit, I'm not sure I could go back.

I just found it, and tried it. unless I am just completely def, wich I know I am not, this plug seemed to do nothing. unless I am just not setting it up right. I have an audigy XFI with the live drive in the front. my girlfriend couldn't hear any differance either. so what am I doing wrong?
