I've had the same issue and when I look at the file types, avi isn't
actually listed.
this only became an issue when I moved from windows xp to windows 7.

Not if the file types are not set. Go in to the preferences, then arrow
down to file types and associate all files to play with Winamp. It will include
.AVI files.
