A couple of ripping questions

I apologize if this message is a repeat, I never saw it posted.
Hi there. I just purchased Winamp Pro and now I have a couple of questions.
1. When ripping CDs, is there any way to ask my drive to work faster than 2X?
2. I set my .MP4 preferences to the maximum 320KB setting which creates
rather large files. I want to maintain at least CD quality, so what is the
minimum I can get away with using. Note that I am an audio snob who *can*
hear the difference.
