Hi Chris. I think, I'll follow your suggestion making several partitions. But as you said, I'm afraid, that I'll have to re-install all my SW again. Just for the sake of curiosity: Would it be possible to install only one partition of 40 GB? Does W2K support it? I still have got that magic number of 8GB maximum for one partition?! Cheers O.S. -----Original Message----- From: win2kforum-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:win2kforum-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Chris Krug Sent: Tuesday, May 29, 2001 5:08 PM To: win2kforum@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [win2kforum] Re: Big HD (40 GB) as Drive C: Happy to help. I have 5 partitions on my 30 gb. 1.5 gb for win98, 2.5 for Win 2K, 5 for programs, 7 for games and the rest is just storage. I went a little crazy, but putting the OS in it's own partition is a good idea, that way, if you need to format and reinstall, you can just redo the partition that the os is in. Most new drives come with a utility that will let you install the new drive as the primary drive, then switch the old drive to secondary and then move everything from the old drive to the new drive without having to reinstall the os. If you decide to put the os and programs in different partitions, then you will have to reinstall. Also, having the old drive on the same controller as the new drive may keep the new drive from reaching it's full speed. If your old drive is say ATA33 and the new drive is ATA100 and your motherboard supports the faster protocol, then the new drive will only run at 33. You can put the old drive on the secondary controller to avoid this. I guess what you could do is format the new drive with the first partition large enough to hold everything on the old drive, then transfer the contents of the old drive to that partition. All new software installs from that point can be put into another partition. -----Original Message----- From: win2kforum-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:win2kforum-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Subi Sent: Tuesday, May 29, 2001 7:08 AM To: win2kforum@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [win2kforum] Big HD (40 GB) as Drive C: Hi Guys. I intend to upgrade my HDD drive C: from 3 GB to 40GB. At the moment I've got on my C-drive only one partition. The file system is NTFS. My PC is a Pentium2/450, the OS is W2K pro, and the Bios is from Award. Should I use the new HD as one big partition? Or shell I divide it into several logical disks? I'd prefer to make a backup of my current drive and then to restore it onto the new drive, or would I have to re-install all my SW again? Any suggestions? Any "keep in mind...."?, Any "goodies"? Any "Don'ts"? BTW. Many thanks to Chris Krug for answering my last question concerning the memory upgrade. O.
