The only thing that gives me trouble is the formatting. In
general, I'm forced to use either the hardware's preferred format (for
exclusive) or the engine's preferred format (for non-exclusive).
This is true. The corollary is also an Achilles heel. Finding a valid format
is *far* more difficult than it needs be.
