I understand where Microsoft is coming from on this, however it is NOT "perfectly possible" to implement more specialised audio devices in a UAA-compliant manner. An example of this is our radio capture card, which passes digitised RF across the PCI buss and uses SSE code in the driver to demodulate multiple radio stations into virtual audio capture devices. This passes the HCTs for Windows XP and Server 2003, but will be left totally out in the cold (from any sort of driver certification perspective) under Vista and beyond. It's become a no-man's land where it's too audio-like to be regarded as "unclassified" but not audio-enough to be UAA.

I'm also left wondering about future support for the interfaces used by non-UAA audio devices (WaveCyclic, WavePCI and even WaveRT). If such devices are now considered pariahs, will they be allowed to install at all further down the track?
