Thnx Ernie, this particular file (from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/howto/articles/Multichannel.aspx#link6) I played with WMP. With WMP, mind you, I don't get any audio out at all, VLC does play it but... only stereo of course. Feels like I'm doing something fundamentally wrong here...
