You might try an occupational therapist that specializes in sensory 
integration.  My thought is to try to fix it first as much as possible and 
compensate for it second.  The real world may present situations where dealing 
with the "unpleasant" is required.

A friend of mine is an OT that works with adults with sensory integration 
issues.  She had an adult with MR that did not like tactile sensations around 
the mouth, thus preventing him from going to the dentist.  Not a good thing.  
After receiving sensory integration for a period of time he was able to 
tolerate being in the dentist chair.  How long had this individual gone before 
this issue was dealt with - he was already an adult.

Maybe you can contact the local Intermediate Unit to see if they have a 
qualified OT.
