Colby,
Perhaps I can help.... First, we are delighted to have you on board! Welcome!
Second, having finished this epistle, I am sorry it is so long.
Listservs
Anyone can contribute to this visionrehabtherapist listserv. It is open. The
AER listservs are only open to members of AER and in some cases the division
itself. I have tried to join the O&M list but because I am not a member of the
O&M Division, it is not open to me. That closed membership requirement is one
reason we (this listserv) have chosen to not to be AER sponsored. We feel
having an open list is important to encourage some who might be interested in
CVRT careers, those others who are looking for information. AERnet is open to
all AER members and gives opportunity for cross discipline communications.
This listserv is frequented by Division 11 (VRT) members and AVRT members. Some
of us belong to both...in fact quite a few. Some belong to neither. AERnet is
the combined listserv for all AER members, and at one point was pretty active
although most posts were from K-12 educators. This last year for some reason
it has not been as active. If you are not a member I encourage you to join.
AVRT
I am assuming you know about AER, but let me tell you a little about AVRT.
AVRT is a wonderful organization and has about 70-125 people who attend their
annual conferences. This year it is in Cleveland, OH - November 8-10. They/we
usually hold their conferences around the Veteran's Day weekend. AVRT is the
name of a combined group of the Mid-America Conference of Rehabilitation
Teachers (MACRT) that was founded in 1947 (I remember that because that was the
year I was born.) and the Southeast Association of Rehabilitation Teachers (I
may not have that name exactly right). At one point there were several
regional RT groups but those were the two strongest, the others faded away.
The history is available on the AVRT website at
http://www.avrt.org/history.html ;.
AVRT is a volunteer organization and has no central office or staff. I have
found the Conference programs to be excellent. They try to keep costs down and
registration and hotel selection is usually very reasonable. ACV credits are
offered. They have a quarterly Newsletter that is full of ideas and good
information. Membership dues are $35/year. It's the best deal in town!
Evidence Based Practice
One reason you do not see a lot of evidence based practice information
exchanged on the listservs is that there isn't much. Much to our shame we do
very little research in our field. Much less than is done by the OT world.
Keep in mind there are only 6 VRT university programs, several without a
full-time faculty member. Adjuncts do not need to do research or publish. I
think the best we can hope for right now is effective practice reports and we
need to do more of that.
In 2016 there were 130,400 OTs in the country and about 750 CVRTs. We are a
small elite cadre of specialized professionals (smile), but we are the heart of
the rehabilitation experience for many people. In most cases we really like
working with OTs, but in some cases we are struggling to see how we best fit
our skill sets together. I have found that I really like reading through the OT
literature because there is a lot of quality research available.
We are all here to encourage people who are blind or visually impaired to live
the lives they want and to learn the skills to help them achieve their life
goals. Its best done when we all work together.
Love having you on board - sorry I was so long winded.... hope all that helps.

In all due respect, I am not making myself clear it would seem.
Marcie points out my exact message. Who knows what AVRT is and who can
contribute to the AER list, the AVRT list the COMS list, the visionrehab list.
I'd like to encourage any and all folks who are interested in the quality of
the blindness and low vision profession to feel free to make valid, evidenced
based comments and suggestions to further our profession as a Certified Vision
Rehabilitation Therapist. I'd like to encourage folks to sign their names
indicating which profession or community they hail from as well.
Thank you all.

Thank you for that information which I knew had occurred.
I'm looking for links to AVRT, discussions by AVRT members,
contributions and resonses from AVRT members and from other CVRT's.
We need to vigorously promote our profession to CVRT's and to COMS,
CRC community, etc. etc. etc.
I am passionate about this topic.

Hello All,
In addition to sharing general information on this listserv, is
there a way to get information shared about Conferences, AVRT, CVRT
Facebook Page posts, solving challenges in our practice, sharing

for your response and information on how to improve our Vision Rehab
