You should really try the LPT.EXE program available (as a floppy
disk image EXPE.BIN) at
http://www.pallier.org/ressources/timelpt/timelpt.html

As it displays the values of all the bits of the parallel port, and show
when they change, it will help determine if the problem is with
the parallel port or with the software (windows or VE).
