I don't know about USB, but serial mouses had a serial connector that carried signal which is not suitable for a direct connection to the parallel port. You would have to perform some heavy surgery on the mouse, to be able to transform the buttons as swiches. Just bying standard switches may be less work. That is what I use in the fMRI (Subjects have one response button in each hand).
