Dear Martin,

I keep my fingers optimistically crossed that 10-bit framebuffers are available in a consumer-level card. If it works, it should simply be a matter of typing "32 10 10 10 0" for the total preferred bit depth and the number of R G B and A bits per pixel in the Vision Egg initial GUI screen.

Let us know how it turns out!

Cheers!
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Well, I got this not-so-useful reply from ATI:

Regarding 10-bit frame buffer support.

The RADEON 9800 products all offer 10-bit frame buffer support. In

ATI seem to lump 10-bit frame buffer support under the term "Smartshader":

http://ati.com/companyinfo/glossary/includes/list.html#smartshader

From what I can tell, "Smartshader" has been supported in both D3D and
OpenGL since the release of ATI's Catalyst 3.8 drivers:

http://www2.ati.com/drivers/catalyst_38_release_notes.html#168664

This occurred back in Oct. 2003:

http://www.ati.com/companyinfo/press/2003/4694.html

less than a year ago. So, perhaps the 10 bit framebuffers are now
supported in the OpenGL drivers. Either way, we're about to buy the
card. We'll give it a try and report what we find.

Hello,

There's some mention of 10-bit framebuffer support on the website.

We're

thinking of getting the ATI Radeon 9800, which claims to have both 10
bit DACs and 10 bit framebuffers, and using this with Vision Egg. Does
anyone have any experience with this? Can we expect to get 2^10 shades
of grey, or are there still OpenGL driver problems as mentioned on the
site?

I've tried and failed to get the 10 bit framebuffers to work in Windows
using OpenGL on both the Radeon 9800 Pro and the Matrox Parhelia. This
was over a year ago now, though, so times may have changed. There was a
thread about this on the psychtoolbox list with myself and Jon Peirce,
among others, sometime last year, if you want to read further.

Cheers!
Andrew
