How very interesting Flor, I did wonder about those OE files in my Recycle Bin which I had not put there. Now you have explained that one. How does one manually compact the folders then? Thanks for the info.

Hi Eleanor,

yes, it will do that after every 100 program closures, if you don't manually compact the folders in the meantime. many people don't understand this and get alarmed when they see/hear Outlook Express automatically take this course. best then (I reckon) to compact the folders manually oneself every so oftenn. Unfortunately, it is also true - and there is both documental and anecdotal evidence to back this up - that occasionally, during the compaction of folders, Outlook Express files become corrupted. Notice also now how each time you compact, a copy of each folder is sent to the Recycle Bin. (This is so that, in the event of corruption being found to have happened as a result of compaction, the former and better copies may be returned to Outlook Express and the old order hopefully restored. handy as it appears, Outlook Express is a far from perfect utility.

Actually Flor it is often on closing Outlook Express that I get the impacting message and that was why I said it did not matter if the programme was closed as I can see it impacting each folder on my desktop even with it closed. ----- Original Message -----

In addition to steps already given, if you haven't done so already, empty the deleted items folder in Outlook Express - from the message list, e y y, and before that, delete messages from Outlook Express that you no longer require.

Joe,

Outlook Express needs to compact all its stuff now and then. Let it do its thing. Sometimes Outlook Express can become corrupted, if not compacted enough.

There is a Disk Cleanup utility that you can run, in programs Accessories system Tools, to help delete temporary files and empty the Recycle Bin. Also, it may be a good idea to run Disk Defragmenter. Then remove from your hard drive stuff you no longer want or need on it.
