Using Thesaurus and Word Count. Note: There is a sample document attached to this email. Introduction: Use Word's built-in Thesaurus to help you find just the right word. The Thesaurus will look up synonyms for a selected word and allow you to replace that word with another. For example, you can use the Thesaurus to replace the word “good" with "fine”," "excellent," or "superior”." The Word Count feature counts all the words in your document, especially helpful for students who have been assigned a 500-word essay. Using the Thesaurus for Screen Readers: Place cursor in the word”basic” in the first paragraph of the Sample Memo. Use the keystrokes Shift and F7 to bring up the thesaurus or select “Tools” - “Language” -Thesaurus” from the menu bar. Then press the F6 key. Just tab now a few times and you will hear the replacement words e.g. fundamental, necessary, essential. When you hear the word “necessary” just press the application key (third from spacebar to the right) and the first choice is Insert just press the Enter key. Now press F6 and you will be back in your document and the word “basic” will now be replaced with the word “necessary”. Another way to look up a word is select Synonyms from the context menu. Right-click the word basic in the fourth step in the Sample memo . A shortcut menu appears near the word. Select Synonyms from the shortcut menu . Several synonyms for the word "basic" appear in the shortcut menu. Now all you have to do is select the word you want to use. Select the word necessary from the synonym list box . The word basic is replaced with the new word, necessary. Using Synonyms for Screen Readers: Place cursor in the word”basic” which is in step 4 in the Sample Memo. Press the application key (third key right of the space bar) to bring up the Context Menu. Down arrow to Synonyms and then right arrow to open up the sub menu. You now down arrow through the list of replacement words e.g. essential, fundamental, necessary etc. Now just enter on “necessary” and the word “basic” will now be replaced with the word “necessary”. Another important feature is Word Count. Word Count does exactly what it says it does: it counts how many words there are in a document. (It also counts the number of pages, lines, and characters.) This is an especially great feature if you're a student and need to know exactly when to quit on that 5, 000-word report. Let's see how many words there are in the Sample Memo document. Make sure no words are selected, and then select Tools → Word Count from the menu . The Word Count dialog box appears, and here you can see how many words, pages, characters, and lines there are in the current document. Screen Readers may have to put on the JAWS cursor to review this information (bottom left corner key of numpad and together with the minus key and then up and down arrow with the number 8 and 2 on the number pad. Click Close or tab to the “close button”. Note:Make sure that once you have finished using the jaws cursor which you activated in the previous instruction that you return to the "PC cursor" by just pressing once the "numpad Plus key". You will hear jaws say, "PC cursor". The Word Count dialog box closes. QUICK REFERENCE TO USE THE THESAURUS: SELECT THE WORD YOU WANT TO LOOK UP. SELECT TOOLS → LANGUAGE → THESAURUS FROM THE MENU. OR... PRESS SHIFT + F7 . OR... RIGHT-CLICK THE WORD, SELECT SYNONYMS , AND SELECT A NEW WORD FROM THE MENU.
