Aine,

here is an adapted version of a reply I sent on this subject to vip_students in december last.

This is because you have checkmarked View By Conversations. To
uncollapse - expand - a conversation, when JAWS or whatever says
'collapsed' press the right-arrow key to open it. you will then see all
messages pertaining to that conversation or that branch thereof. Again,
whenever you hear/see collapsed, press the right-arrow key to expand.

If you want to uncheck View By Conversation, from the message list press
alt+ v, then right-arrow into Current Views submenu. Press up-arrow
once, and then press enter to uncheck it.

However, viewing messages by conversation can be quite a handy way to
have messages organised by topic, thread, etc., so that you can hjump to
the last message of a conversation and then read it and hopefully many
of the previous messages within that conversation also. This is the
usual way i have things set up.

Now if you should still want messages organised by conversation, but
don't want threads collapsed, do the following:
-- From the message list, go into tools | Options - ctrl+shift+o;
-- Press shift+tab, and then press ctrl+tab to the Read tab control;
-- Now press the tab key a few times. You come to a checkbox,
"automatically expand grouped messages", and this is, by default,
checked. press spacebar to change its state.

have a look at the other options there. Tab to OK and press enter.
