Forget what i said (if you ever remembered!) about USB1 and USB2 ports. the front USB ports, however, cannot take as much power as the back USB ports.

hi,

The USB problem could be that the port has failed. (this does happen from time to time, unfortunately.) Especially if it's only USB 1, which is lower power than USB 2 (more standard these days). Often, USB1 ports will be in the front while USB2 ports are in the back. One solution for her might be, if there is an available other USB port, to get a self-powered USB hub which you also plug in separately. (this also allows fore more USB connections to the computer.)

Supernova has nothing to do with it Flor. thank you for these helpful suggestions. One is here in London and is my desk top. This turning off thing just started a few days ago. The computer is about 2 years old. The lap top is in Sligo and my sister-in-law is using it without any screen reader. It is that she links a qwerty keyboard and there was no prjoblem in plugging in the USB one until lrecently and immediately she plugs it in the lap top goes off!!!! I think she said she had it at PC World but she is not technical and does not know what the problem is. It is an old lap top so not the end of the world there. No problem if she does not plug in external keyboard.

Eleanor,

Do you use the same multi-adapter, different adapters, or do you connect the main plug from each of them directly into the wall socket? Do you have any difficulty starting (or restarting) one or both of the computers? When the computer shuts down like that, it is usually for safety reasons, i.e., the danger of overheating, which could be due to fan malfunction. There are two fans on each computer - that for the motherboard, and that for the power supply. It could be that fans on both of the computers need cleaning, or replacing. (Unless you can tell us that Supernova is somehow implicated.)

No Paul they are in different places and different countries *smile*. There is nothing wrong with the power supply there is something on the desk top and something on the lap top triggering the machine to go off.

Hi Eleanor,

If both desktop and laptop are both exhibiting similar breakdowns then I would suspect the power supply in your house as being faulty.

Paul.

I have a desk top computer. A new fault over the past 3 days, it will suddenly and for no apparent reason turn itself off!!! At first it was
happening on Internet and e-mail but tonight it started when I was
reading a long word document. Any ideas on this one please?

The second problem relates to a lap top. It's problem is that if I plug
in a USB keyboard this triggers the lap top to turn off. It is not
possible to power on again for nearly 24 hours!!!!

Now where on earth am I getting these gremlins?
