Hi Mark,

What I find about the audio alternatives for those of us who would need them
is that because I have slight hearing loss in one ear the audio is often so
distorted that it is very difficult to make out. It seems to vary in quality
from site to site however, some good and some not so good.

Paul.

Hi Paul,

What you are coming across is called a CAPTCHA and it's intended to
ensure that the person logging on is a human and not a piece of
software used by spammers. It's usually a distorted picture of some
letters and numbers which a sighted human has to copy into an input
box. So yes, you would need sighted assistance. However, the fact
that this creates a barrier for people with visual impairments is
becoming better known and some CAPTCHAs now have a link to a audio
alternative which speaks out the letters. Also, when you come across
a CAPTCHA, look around for a link saying something like "click hear
if you can't read this". It will usually take you to an alternative
registration method, probably involving email. It'll take longer but
should be accessible to you and still secure for the website.

All the best,
Mark
