thanks for this Francis. Actually no it is not checking for messages only when
I tell it to do so. I know I can also use left Ctrl and M and that works for
me too but thank you for your tips which I will impliment.

  Hi Eleanor,

I'd imagine it checks for new messages automatically when you open it. The
following should help you in setting up Outlook to check for messages every few
minutes. F 5 will also do a send and receive whenever you press it.
1.. On the Tools menu, click Options.
2.. On the Mail Delivery tab, tick the Check for new messages every check
box.
3.. In the Minutes box, press either the UP ARROW to increase or the DOWN
ARROW to decrease the checking interval time. Outlook automatically checks for
new mail every 10 minutes by default.
4.. Press Apply, and then OK.
  Hope this helps,

  Francis.

    Hi Paul and Others
Still looking for answer to previous question re Outlook. How can I set it
up to check for e-mail as soon as I open Outlook and how can I get it to check
every 2-3 minutes?

    Many thanks.

    Eleanors
