Hi Frank,

You probably wouldn't have to pay for it, and I reckon you wouldn't have to 
die for it!  Microsoft has a number of such files to help those of us using 
earlier versions of word read documents produced with later versions.  If 
you're going to be receiving many of these files, it would probably be worth 
your while to download the compatibility pack.

Your friend could try joining this list by, first, writing an empty message 
to irelandvip_students-subscribe@xxxxxxxxxxxxx  and then responding to the 
message asking for confirmation, as instructed.  .

thanks for the info
the file i was trying to open was an e mail attachment
its a word file
i get a message asking if i want to download a compatible pack
i am not sure if i have to pay for it and anyway i have dial up and probably
wouldnt live long enough to see it downloaded
