Hi Paul, Just tried it out here recently and found it totally inaccessible. I am talking about the Kindle for PC software mentioned further down in the message body and not the Kindle hardware product here. I however have an IPhone and can use the Kindle app fine on it. Paul. -----Original Message----- From: vip_students-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:vip_students-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Paul Dromey Sent: 03 August 2011 10:51 To: vip_students@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [vip_students] FW: [vicsireland] Re: Amazon Launch Kindle Software for PC with Accessibility Features Below find a thread of messages regarding Kindle from earlier this year. Anyone had experience of using it? The link didn't open for me but I will post it and if anyone wants to give it a try here is the message. There have been no replies negative or positive as yet to the UK list. Hi all, I have been advised that the new Kindle for pc software with accessible features is useable outside of the U.S. The download itself is not easy to get, so below is a dropbox link which should help. I believe it is 240 MB so be warned. I have not tried this myself but would be interested in knowing how people get on. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3918790/KindleForPC-installer.exe David -----Original Message----- >From: vicsireland-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:vicsireland-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Flor Lynch Sent: 21 January 2011 20:27 To: vicsireland@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [vicsireland] Re: Amazon Launch Kindle Software for PC with Accessibility Features Ciaran, The issue essentially is copyright, and authors/publishers' control. The TTS of the Kindle software accessibility pack is enabled (I hear) because of an exception under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Thus the necessity to detect the presence of a screen-reader - either JAWS or NVDA - by the program. This Kindle debate (and accessibility or lack thereof, why restricted to the US only) has been going on for more than a year at this stage. Apple product users have other ways of accessing many ebooks, in the epub format. ----- Original Message ----- >From: "Ciaran Ferry" <Ciaran.Ferry@xxxxxx> To: <vicsireland@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, January 20, 2011 10:03 AM Subject: [vicsireland] Re: Amazon Launch Kindle Software for PC with Accessibility Features That's a real pity Tony. Hopefully it won't be too long before it's available this side of the pond. Wonder what the issue is - i would've thought that if electronic versions of books were available in a certain jurisdiction that there'd be no problem using this software to read them. Do you know if it's a copyright thing, or just Amazon being awkward and / or lazy? Do you know if different versions of the application are required for each store i.e. one for amazon.com, one for amazon.co.uk etc? This was the response from Amazon. Tony Here is the response which I received from amazon.com regarding accessible Kindle for PC " Thank you for your inquiry about Kindle for PC with Accessibility Plugin. At this time, we are unable to offer this software to our international customers. To successfully register the application and purchase digital content from Amazon.com, the 1-Click payment method listed on the Manage Your Kindle page> must be a credit or debit card issued by a U.S. Bank with a U.S. billing address. We value our international customers and hope to make Kindle for PC with Accessibility Plugin available internationally in the future.
