MJW, with a bread maker you just put dried yeast, flower, sugar, butter (or other fat), salt and water, in the appropriate quantities, into the machine's pan, press a button or two, and, four or five hours later, your loaf is mixed, proved, baked and ready to eat. A wide range of recipes is available, from whole wheat through French and Italian, grannary and glutin-free. You can make current bread, seed bread, and even cake in the machine.

The bread may not be quite as good as the hand-kneaded loaves my mother used to bake, but it's a lot quicker and easier to make.

Forgive my ignorance, but how does a bread maker differ from an oven?

Hi Kim,
That makes perfect sense. Do you have the all dancing, singing one which
sells on Amazon for Â£130 or a different model. Panasonic appear to do a few
and they all seem highly rated. The super duper one does seem to be rather
large. I want it for the flat so while I do have a reasonably sized kitchen
I'd not want to large a model.

Now the eating is another problem.. and bread is definitely a weakness for
me.

Hi Sharon,
I've got the Panasonic too, had it this Christmas so I believe it's one of
the latest models.
Buttons are easy to use and beep nicely. Only downside is it remembers the
program you used last whenever you turn it back on, which is great if
you're
likely to use the same one each time!
So, say I made bread on program 2, with medium crust, next time that would
automatically be ready to go, but if I didn't want that, pressing the menu
button then moves to program 3, not back to 1...if this is making any
sense!
So I'd have to remember which I last used.
Other than that, it makes awesome bread that doesn't last 5 minutes here,
even my six year old daughter who has to have crustless supermarket bread
gobbles it up, crusts and all!

Sharon, if you do buy the Panasonic, let me know and I'll send you some
basic information to get you started.

Sharon, I have no sight at all, and use a Panasonic bread maker. It
has button controls, easy to locate, and the machine beeps when any of
the buttons is pressed. You need to know how many beeps are required
for all the settings.

I've had my machine for a couple of years, so they might have changed
the model. Panasonic have a good customer advice service, and they
will tell you if the current machine beeps. Their number is

08448 443899

If you decide on the Panasonic, I suggest you get the instructions
brailled or audio-ed. If you need Braille, there are one or two
transcribers you might contact. My notes on transcribers may well be
out of date, so best ask RNIB.

Hi all,

This list has gone quiet so hope it's sstill active.

I eat very little bread these days but do enjoy good quality bread
when I buy it. My partner however loves bread and misses it if not in
his diet. So I'm thinking of buying a bread maker so I can make
healthy bread without all the hard work.

I've looked at several models on the internet and I'm not easily able
to establish if the controls are via a touch panel or buttons - I
suspect the former in most cases. I was wondering if any of you have
a bread maker and can pass on any tips or recommendations?

Hope you are all well? I did eventually get my new kitchen installed
in London and it surpassed my expectations. It's not a large flat but
has really opened up the flat. In a week I'm having a new bathroom
installed. Once again it's not a large bathroom - I want to replace
the bath with a lovely shower cubicle but Tony wants a bath so a
little negotiation is going on! Wish me luck!
