Eamonn,

NTL (or UPC if you prefer) have recently re-vamped their packages to include
their recorder box (DVR). The options now start at €25 for the value pack, and
go right up to €34 for the max pack. You're likely paying close to €25 for your
analogue service at the moment anyway.

A pretty reliable list of the channels and packages is at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_channels_on_UPC_Ireland
(The listing on the UPC site tends to be pretty inaccurate).

Skys packages start at €22, and go up to €32. A comprehensive list of their
prices is at:
http://www.sky.com/portal/site/ireland/products/packages/costs

Both providers call their recorder box "plus". With Sky you buy the box up
front (normally at a subsidised price), but the catch is that you sign a 12
month contract, often to take one of the more expensive packages i.e. movies
or sports. Make sure to check this out.

You need a dish for Sky, where as UPC works over cable.

Sky also require that you keep your box connected to a telephone line, although
I have heard that it may be possible to get around this - depends how nice your
installer is!

You'll be able to schedule recordings over the web or from your mobile with
Sky. UPC currently don't offer this facility.

There is AD available on Sky, but not on UPC.

All the BBC and ITV regions (TV and Radio) are available on Sky, but you only
get selected ones with UPC. You won't however be able to schedule recordings on
these as they're not on the EPG (you'll need to manually add them through the
"Other Channels" menu).

Sky is generally better quality, UPC have been known to experience occasional
outages.

I believe that Sky charge a €100 call-out fee if something goes wrong with your
set-up, where as it's free with UPC as you're essentially renting the service.

Both providers offer high definition packages if that interests you, although
the channels which provide HD programming vary.

BBC Four is available on the UPC EPG.

Payment options other than DD are available, but you'll pay extra for the
privilege.

UPC also offer phone and broadband, and additional discounts are available
depending on how many services you take from them.

Hope this helps,

Ciaran
