Open the document. Hit alt and F together, then hit I then hit E. This
should work.

Hi Susan,
I don't have a protected file at the moment to try this, but the below
steps should work.
When the file is open go to the file menu and arrow down to 'info'.
Hit enter and tab across. There should be an option to enable editing.
I'm assuming you are using Word 2010 or later.
