As of today (monday the 23rd June), RTÉ Radio have put their DAB services
on-line. This means that people outside the areas of Dublin, Cork and
Limerick cities who have Web access, and those living in the above-mentioned
conurbations who don't yet have DAB receivers but also have Web access, can
now hear them 'live'. They are, as usual for RTÉ Web, difficult to locate
exactly on the RTÉ radio site; but

http://www.rte.ie/radio/dab.html

is as good a place as any to start from.

Now, in addition there is an RTÉ Media Player, which will play any of the
RTÉ radio stations, digital or 'analogue'. There may be problems, however,
in navigating between the Media Player - which can now also play an embedded
Windows Media stream - and the main 'RTÉ information' window: they seem to
cut across each other. One is tabbing in the player itself; but then the
information window comes into focus when one didn't ask for it, didn't
alt-tab to it to bring it into focus. Also it would be nice if RTÉ
developed an independent Media Player interface - truly separate from the
browser - in similar manner to what the BBC have done with their IPlayer.
Thus, I believe there are accessibility issues on the site as I have
referenced.

On another note: Whilst it is good that RTÉ have put their digital services
on to the Web for the benefit of those who haven't yet got terrestrial
access to their digital audio broadcast service, I would hope that this move
isn't just a way of short-changing the rest of the country, to save that
all-important money from their end. I was able to get the RTÉ Choice url
into Windows Media Player and have it play there, at much better volume than
in the native RTÉ embedded Windows Media player. (There was a lot of
rubbish in their stream url address, and I had to remember and then manually
type in the url as it might be seen properly by WMP, as it would not copy.
My work-round worked, much to my gratification.) (I did, however, hear a
hum on the RTTÉ Choice transmission, betraying that it was a relaying of
other broadcasts - from BBC, NPR, and some other stations. (I also heard
the other stations, but Choice had interesting content going on it.)

I would therefore be interested if people would explore
http://www.rte.ie/radio/dab.html

and how they find it working or not working. (Incidentally, the stream url
that I got hold of, I had to get via the properties, via context menu. Even
then, it was not spoken by JAWS except it showed in braille.) (I had turned
Flash off for the RTÉ site, previously, because I'd found it annoying, among
other things. But since there is a Flash player involved on the digital
site I have now turned Flash back on.) I'm using JAWS9.21.69.
