Hi all,
It was great to meet up with people at the NVDA Workshop in Whitworth
road on Saturday. Thanks to VICS and NCBI for organising the day.
Thanks to all the participants for making it a truly collaborative
learning experience I learnt a lot. Please suggest ways that workshops
like this can be improved. . Let's hope we can look forward to future
events.
I would like to make a few follow-up points.
1. Window Update problem
During the day we had a technical challenge when a Microsoft 10 Update
took effect. When my PC started to work again, I found that I couldn't
enter data into an Excel cell. NVDA said Unknown when I began to type.
This problem has also been reported by other NVDA users. It seems to
be a feature introduced by Microsoft as part of this Windows upgrade.
Hopefully Microsoft will fix this, but in the meantime there are two
recommended NVDA work-arounds.
The problem has been reported with Windows 10 and Office 365 and the
latest Windows 10 upgrade.
Re-installing Microsoft Office is said to fix this.
A simpler solution is to do the following:
Go into Excel options by entering alt ft
Hit down-arrow a few times until you get to Advanced
Hit tab a few times to get to "Allow editing directly in cells" and
untick this option.
Tab to the okay button and select it.
I followed these steps and my problem is now solved. However, I will
probably re-install Office at some stage.
2. Reading the Subject and the From fields in Outlook with keys like
alt1 and alt 2 as can be done in JAWS.
So far I haven't found a direct solution to this but the following
two approaches come close.
*When you are in the Inbox and positioned on a particular email, you
can read the individual columns by table navigation for instance by
alt control right-arrow. Hit this a few times and it will read each
column, including the Subject field and the from field.
*An alternative approach is to use Object Navigation.Hit NVDA numpad 5
to go into Object Navigation. then Hit NVDA Numpad 8 to to the child
windows . NVDA Numpad 6 will then go through each child window,
reading the Subject, From, Date iindividually.
I think it would be straightforward to write an add-on to mimic the
JAWS keys exactly. If people would be interested in this, I can look
into the possibility of an add-on for this.
