When you hit shift tab, it puts you into the Favourites Tree view. If
you have a large number of sub folders and sub-sub folders, you can
add selected ones individually to the Favourites Tree view at the top
level. I have done this at work and I find it useful. It shows you the
number of unread mails for each sub folder in the list. One point to
note though, is that if you have a folder with the same name in
multiple mailboxes, you could end up with several folders with the
same name in Favourites. I found the only way around this was to
rename the folders so that I have a unique name for each sub-folder
that I want to put into Favourites.

But if I am wanting to go to my drafts or calendar for example, I will use
control + Y, as it just takes me to that top level.
So it I use either command depending on where I want to go.

You can actually open the folder tree with CTRL+Y as well. So, for
example, CTRL+Y, then right arrow on inbox, will open up the list of
subfolders in the inbox.

I haven't got it in front of me right now, but I just shift Tab to get to
the list of subfolders.
If they are subfolders of the inbox for example, you may need to right
arrow when focused on inbox to open the list up. Then down arrow through
the list.
That opened state should hold then though.
Control Y seems to just take you to the top level, inbox, drafts, sent,
calendar etc.
