Hi Marian,

As always, it was great meeting you at the weekend.

Now, I promised I had a list of keystrokes which you could use with your phone, but I just can't find the document anywhere. You're talking to the most disorganised person in the world here!

However, I've the same phone as you, so I'll jot down a few of the things you might try.

On your phone, you have the standard telephone keypad, with two dots on the 5 button to orientate you.

Above the keypad, you have a five way button, which is oval shaped. This carries out a different function which ever way you push it - rather like a joystick or your arrow keys on the PC keyboard. You can do up (by pushing the top of the oval), and similarly left, right and down. Then by pushing the middle of the button, you activate the fifth function. This is used to scroll around the menus in the phone.

To the left of this oval, you have a square button, which is called Key One. To the right of the oval, you have another square button, called Key Two.

Down the left side of the key pad, you will notice two narrow buttons, the top one is the button to answer the phone, the longer one below this (say to the left of numbers 4, and 7, is your menu key.

To the right of the keypad, you have three similar buttons. The top one is to hang up, the next one down is a sort of back button, and the one at the bottom is your 'Talks' button... which is very important.

So, there's you're phone's buttons. I assume you've found the power button on the side?

Now, for a few Talks commands. Talks is like Jaws, it's your speech software on the phone. To make it work, you do a series of double keystrokes.

To turn the volume of the speech up, press the Talks key on the bottom right of the phone's keypad, and press the number 6. This will raise the volume in increments - if you want to go up further, hit Talks and 6 again.

So, for simplicity, they refer to the keystrokes as Talks And Number... e.g. Talks and 6 to increase volume.

Talks and 5 brings the volume down.

Talks and 8 increases the speed, Talks and 7 decreases the speed of the speech.

Once you're comfortable with this, you should now activate the Talks training mode which will show you all the keystrokes available.

This keystroke is Talks and 0. So, hit the Talks key, and press 0. The phone will announce 'Training mode is yes'. Now, you can hit Talks and any key on the phone to see what it does. The function won't be carried out, Talks will just explain to you what would happen if you hit those keys were you not in Training mode. To come out of training mode and resume using the phone normally, hit Talks and 0 again. Talks will announce 'Training mode is no'. I found using training mode was the quickest way for me to learn on my own what the Talks functions were, and you can't do any damage once you're there!

Don't be afraid to experiment by pressing the Menu button (long one to the left of the keypad) and scrolling through the applications on your phone. To open an application, press the middle of the Oval! To close it again, press Key Two, or the back (or exit) key which is above the Talks key to the right of the number 6.

Unfortunately, I can't explain properly what Key One does, or what the different options activated by your Oval key will do etc... as they are different from phone to phone. You can configure them to do any number of things. However, just press them and see! You can't do any harm, and if you get in to trouble, just hit the
exit button to the right of your number 6.

You can assign Key One to open up your messaging inbox, or set the top of the Oval button to open your list of contacts - just press them and see what opens.

To start texting, you need to find the 'Messaging application, and select new message.

When you open a new message, you are dropped in the 'To' field, much like in an email! Press Key One, scroll down the resulting menu, until you find add recipient. This will bring up your address book, where you can find the person you want to 'text!'. When you find their name, hit Key One again, and you will be returned to your message.

In your 'To' field, you will see the added name. Hit the bottom of the oval (like doing an arrow down), and you are now in the area where you can start typing.

Here's how to get your letters - don't worry if you are slow to start, you get used to it quickly and before you know it you'll have 'Texter's Thumb Syndrome' from typing so fast on the phone.

Each number on the keypad, equates to a series of letters and numbers, or punctuation marks.

Number 1 holds your main punctuation marks. Press it once, and a full stop appears. Press it twice quickly, and a comma appears. Three times, and a question mark appears.

The 2 button holds A, B, and C. Hit it once for an A, hit it twice for a B, and three times for a C. That's how it works all the way up - check out the list below to see which buttons hold which letters. Believe me, once you get it, it comes as second nature!

- 2 has A, B, C.
- 3 has D, E, F.
- 4 has G, H, I.
- 5 has J, K, L.
-6 has M, N, O.
- 7 has P, Q, R, S (press 7 four times for an S)
- 8 has T, U, V.
- 9 has W, X, Y, Z.
- 0 is your space bar!

You may be wondering how to get an actual number in to your text? Just hold the number of the key you want for a couple of seconds, and that will appear on the screen in your message... E.g. hold the number 4 for a couple of seconds and you will see a 4 appear in your message).

Your backspace is the key above the Talks key, just to the right of 6.

When you've tapped out your message, hit Key One, scroll up and down the resulting menu with your oval key, find send... hit Key One, and off your message will go.

I got my first Talks equipped phone a couple of years ago and had no instructions on how to use it (which might be painfully obvious from the above!). Just experiment, don't be afraid of ruining anything - you can't really go wrong.

Just remember Key One selects things, and everything on the phone is menu driven. Key One usually activates a menu of options while within an application like your address book etc... and Key Two will usually take you back or cancel an operation.

So go for it! Have fun, and very soon you'll have joined the 'Texter's Revolution'.

Good luck, and if you've any further need for help, don't hesitate to mail the list.

Cheers,

Tony

Hi Tony,
I have just got my new mobile the Nokia 66 80 with talks 2.50 on it. If anyone has an accessible manual or a few tips on how to get used to using it I would be very grateful, and then I will be able to join the texting community. Many thanks kind regards, Marian
