Gerry,
One small point of clarification. The other tab control, besides the chat tab,
is the files tab.

Subject: [vicsireland] Re: Following up, getting connected to virtual
technology room / channel
Hi Stuart and all,
In persisting with Rock B and Flor on the night of the event, I learned the few
tweeks which got me going and passed them on to Flor whom is trying them out on
his own program. Essentially the following settings and preference settings
will assist in getting one up on air so to speak. If anyone wishes to use my
following suggestions and wishes to try them out, please email me and we can
arrange a time on channel. My email address is: gershan@xxxxxx
1. As Stuart mentioned, headset or earphones are needed in order to cut
out feedback from jaws, nvda and other voice screenreaders. People might get
slightly confused in the event that you have a newer computer and a more recent
sound card. I have a win 7 laptop and in a conversation last night and
wearing my earphones, I was able to cut out the feedback from the screen reader
and amazingly, the conversation came through over the laptop speaker. Older
machines may only give sound all through the earphones but this won’t be a real
problem once you set up the hot key for speaking on the channel.
2. A very important point of good reception on the channel are the
following items. A. open teamtalk and tab through the window, you will find
an item called microphone volume put this up to 100% then tab to microphone
gain and increase the level to 60%
3. Select the client menu and select the preferences option. You will
land in the General tabsheet: first item says nickname but you can put in your
own name , next is the usual boy/girl male/female button options. Next item is
away status. This has a default value so tab to next item which is deactivate
voiceactivation when inactive: leave unticked tab to next item “speech
transmission mode – push to talk” tick this box and tab to the next box which
is vitally important to note my hotkey selection: this is called “speech
transmission mode setup keys.”. press spacebar on this item and listen to the
instructions. Hold down one of the control keys for a few seconds and release
to make it the hot key to speak on the channel. Important note! When you are
connected in teamtalk, hold down the control key you have selected as a hot key
while you are speaking and then release it once you have finished speaking –
This action acts in the same manner as you might have used walkie talkies in
the old days. Next tab to the next box which shows the hot key combination you
have created and jaws will say “control” so you know the key you have selected
as it is confirmed here. Next tab to the next tick box which is voice
activation and check that it is unticked then tab to the ok button and press
spacebar or enter to close the preferences window. Lest anyone wishes to check
my correctness in this issue, my only right of passage is the fact that Rock B
the American voice on the channel who is assisting in setting up communication
coaxed me through the process as I used text chat to communicate when I
couldn’t make voice contact and we worked things out from there.
4. Final point, Stuart did mention that one has to use the control and
tab key to move between the voice window and the chat message window, maybe it
is me but I found the chat window by continuing to tab through the window.
After your screen reader says microphone volume and microphone gain, you will
hear screen reader saying “Chat” one more tab and you will be in the text box
for writing a message to the channel and the following 2 tab points are the
send and cancel buttons. So! If you find that you are after making the above
adjustments and still you aren’t getting through, use the text chat to alert
people or channel operator to your presence. In the event you have
inadvertently changed your main window and you find the chat window, the text
writing box but can’t see the send and cancel buttons, go into the user menu
and select the text message option and press enter, In the event you can’t get
out of the text message window to find the tab key finding the microphone
volume or microphone gain then go into user menu, select the text message
option and press enter which will hide the window. Window. Personally
speaking, I think it is best to leave up the message window in the event you
wish to fire off a message to assist in setting up voice communication in order
to be able to communicate with the channel members. In the event that anyone
wishes to try out the above options and test them out, I’ll try to be on the
channel between 9.30pm -10pm. Also, Remember if you haven’t checked it already,
you should use the following settings in the sound system tabsheet: direct
sound option, imput device “microphone high definition”, output device
“speakers”, pr3ess the test button to see if you have sound, you should hear
the sound of your keyboard or speech as you talk. The duplex tick box should be
ticked, next is the echo removal tick box leave empty, ensure the microphone
automatic gain is ticked and the noise reduction box is ticked and next is the
volume which should be around 50% then press spacebar on ok button. I hope
this helps and doesn’t cause confusion.

Subject: Following up after yesterday's virtual technology event
Importance: High
Hello everyone,
Firstly, thank you sincerely to each of you for taking the time to join our
first attempt at a virtual technology event last night. I use the word
‘attempt’ as we all know it did not at all go according to plan.
We have learned some valuable lessons from last night’s event however, and we
really want this initiative to work, as we believe strongly that it can have
huge benefits in allowing us all to share knowledge.
Some of the key things we’ve learned are:
1. Everyone using the system needs to have headphones or a headset to
avoid hearing room noise or screen readers, or indeed the sound from your
speakers of other participants speaking.
2. I mistakenly suggested that people should use ‘voice activation’ and
not ‘push to talk’ which is apparently the recommended method for the TeamTalk
system. We have now made changes to the virtual room which will force everyone
to use ‘push to talk’ and I’ll send a separate email about that in the next few
days so that people will understand how it works and how to set up your
equipment to use it.
So, once again we sincerely value your time and patience as we work through the
glitches in what is for us a very new system, and we really hope you’ll join us
in a repeat and hopefully much more useful session in the next week or so.
Again, I’ll send an email to everyone here later today with a suggestion for a
second run.
Finally, Bert, I wonder if you could please pass this email on to Michael? I
know he was in the room last night but unfortunately I don’t have an email
address for him.
Best wishes, and again thank you everyone.
Regards,
Stuart
