Hi Tony, congratulations to all involved for keeping things going for another year and increasing scope and quantity of activity for next. I have a simple question though. I came across a school student who is rapidly losing her sight. She is working witht eh help of an assistant at school, who Is the way I got to meet her. What is the minum age for joining vics. She has equipment and relatively little knowledge of how to use it between them. It struck me that one of th training days might be very useful to her and the mailing list to both of them. Ed -----Original Message----- From: vicsireland-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:vicsireland-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Tony Murray Sent: 23 August 2007 12:01 To: VICS Subject: [vicsireland] Chairperson's Update Hi VICS Members, It's late August, we're heading for Autumn, the All Ireland Final is coming (Up the Dubs!), the Premiership is back (I couldn't believe it either - Rob Styles is now playing for Chelsea), and I reckon it's time for one of my infamous updates. There is so much planned, I'm not exactly sure where to start. Here goes anyway... One of the big things we've been working on over the past number of months is the Access Technology Acquisition Grant (ATAG) project. This whole initiative was kicked off completely based on feedback we received at the AGM in 2006. You will be hearing much more about this in the very near future, as things are ready to go, so stand by. If you didn't know already, it is a scheme which will enable people to purchase access technology at a reduced price. Successful applicants can receive up to 25% of the purchase price of their new product back, from the ATAG. There are a few terms and conditions, but no sneaky ones (as the ad says). It will be launched in the coming weeks, and it can be back dated for a fixed period of time... so if you've just bought something, have no fear. VICS are now planning an open day, which will hopefully be held in late November or early December. This year, it will be in Dublin. The event will take the form of a seminar style session in the morning, followed by hands-on demonstrations of technology in the afternoon. Once we have the date/time/agenda nailed down, you will be the first to know. In the past, these open days have proved very informative and a lot of fun. The VICS travelling training road show is about to hit somewhere in the midlands. We've done Dublin, Galway and Cork so far, so we figured our next port of call should be somewhere central. As yet, we are still working on the finer points of the event, but naturally as soon as we have everything set up the call will go out. These training days are aimed at our less advanced computer users, and we usually cover topics like an introduction to the Internet and Email, Microsoft Word, Jaws and Windows, Mobile Phones with Talks, and much more. Naturally, they are very informal and a laugh is had every time. There is a plan to hold a lunch time seminar in the headquarters of The Irish Computer Society, covering the area of inclusive design on the web. This will be taking place in the next couple of months, and it is hoped that these seminars will become a regular feature on the VICS Calendar. Stand by for more details. Our research group has a number of initiatives which they will be working on over the next year. The personnel has grown in numbers, and it is anticipated that they will be coming out with some really interesting reviews and technology walk throughs in the coming months. The research area on the web site will include simple tutorials on how to book flights on the Internet, how to set up a Gmail account, how to use EBay etc. In addition, they will be looking at newly emerging technologies as before, letting us know what's hot and what's not! vicsireland.org will be getting it's long anticipated member's area very soon. This will enable you to log in to the site, and have access to far more training materials, past articles from Infovics, reviews of technology and much more. It is expected that the site will grow significantly in the near future, to include far more audio material as well as text based documents. Our mailing list has been quite busy for the past while. Keep it up guys, this is what we want to see. No question is too basic or too advanced, send it in and see if you get a response. Do use the list if you have some sort of technology related query, that's what it's there for. Somebody is bound to get back to you with an easy to follow solution. As usual, we are seeking your feedback and contributions. If you feel you have something you can add to the work we are undertaking at the moment, please do get in contact with me. We're always looking for new ideas to base projects on, and we're always looking for help when setting up our various events. So, if you want to be more active in the world of VICS, we'd love to have you!
