Hi Flor,

The house is mid terrace, so you can't put it on the side! If it
went on the back, the dish wouldn't be facing south.

I suppose i could put it on the back wall, but it's a party wall to a
national school, and tempting as it is, I wouldn't really like to give the

kids radiation!!

If I did put it on the back wall of the garden, there’s about a 60ft run
to the house, so I assume there would be some consideral loss in the
coaxial cable.

As if that wasn’t complicated enough, there are 4 aerials in the back
already: hf and vhf verticals (transmission,) mw loop and a long wire.

An additional dish would definitely see me in the divorce courts!

Also, as there are lots of trees and shrubs in the garden, I don’t know
if I’d have a clear line of sight run at the satellite.

I suppose, if I was really serious, I could sacrifice the hf
transmission aerial, as I’m not a very active amateur radio operator.

Flor, bet your sorry you asked!!

Ciaran: Howth coast Guard are involved in a competition this weekend,
in which a number of air sea rescues will be demonstrated on the pier on
Saturday. EI0MAR will be active from the Martello tower, and it’s hoped
to set up another station in the harbour.

I’ll be out there for a while, but not sure of times as yet. May be worth
keeping an ear on 145.575 – the North Dublin Radio (NDR) frequency.

Cheers,

Eamonn

Hi Eamonn,

Any reason the dish *has* to be on the front? You could have it on the
back
or wherever, , provided the dish is 'south facing', and no obstacles
between
it and south. (I hope I'm not talking off my hat!) You could have a
'mini-dish' instead or preferably. I don't have a television connected to
mine (not Sky), except when having to re-set it (with sighted assistance).
You can have your hi-fi with it fine, and *listen* to the Beeb TV.

Hi Ulla,

needless to say, I'm jealous.

I doubt if I'll get to see it, as I don't like messing with software,
unless I have some idea of what I'm doing!

Satellite would be nice, but the dish would have to go on the front of
the house, which I really don't want to do.

Move house?

Eamonn

Hi Eamonn

Tony and I went to see James Taylor in the Waterfront Hall in Belfast a
few weeks ago and yes you are right his voice is still in great shape.
The gig was absolutely amazing – one of the best I’ve been to in a long
time. If you do get a chance to get hold of the programme you’ll be in
for a treat. We got front row seats and even got to shake hands with the
legend as well.

I hope you manage to get it sorted.

All the best.

Ulla

Thanks Claud, Flor and Ciaran,

I think The proxy server thing, sounds a bit too complicated for me!
Just a thought, as there is a James Taylor Night available on BBC4 TV,
for the next 5 days. Saw him about 2 years ago, and his voice is still in
great shape - unlike Dylan.

Can I kill two birds with the one stone? While I've seen references to
the AGM in NCBI on Saturday 24th may, I don't remember a mention of the
time?

Cheers,

Eamonn

Claude you're right, that's exactly how it works. The proxy accesses the
target site on your behalf using an IP allocated in a region in which
access to the content is permitted. So in this case the proxy would
contact the BBC servers using an IP address allocated to a UK-based ISP
/ organisation.

Depending on the number of users / streams going through the proxy at
any one time, this could become a bottleneck very quickly though.

A friend of mine tried it for BBC radio streams in the past but thought
it was more trouble than it was worth, ended up going for Sky Digi
instead.

Yes that 'could' work.

Hi Eamonn

I need to do more digging, but the solution would be to use a proxy
server server based in the UK. It changes your IP address for one in the
UK (if the proxy is located in the UK). You would need to install a
piece of software on your computer to do this. All I know is that it
slows down your computer a fair bit.

Kind regards
