Hello,
Yep. I talked with Apple accessibility this evening and that’s what they had me
use. They did a screen share and while they couldn’t see what my fingers were
doing, they were able to let me know when it worked and when it didn’t. I find
the scrub much easier on the ipad; on the phone, it kept telling me it was a
flick right. Apple thinks the problem may be that I’m not getting the diagonal
part of the z. They said that I may have to go to the Apple Store and have them
guide my hand so I can get a better feel of the gesture.

I'm assuming you know about the practice area in the VoiceOver settings? You
can go in there, experiment, and when you get the scrub gesture right, it
will tell you so.

Hi Jeannette,
I can't rmemember now if I ever had to turn the phone when changing pages.
Maybe I did, I just don't remember doing it. I met with the moderator of an
iphone user group I am in and she said the issue is most likely a timing
issue in which I am doing the gesture too slow and that's why it's
registering as a swipe. I had a similar problem when I first got my iPad; the
double tap gesture was giving me trouble. I had to go into settings to change
the double tap timeout to the maximum value and I still have it set that way.
I know there isn't an option like for the scrub gesture, but at least turning
the phone seems to work for now. For some reason I just can't get the back
and forth motion quick enough to be considered a scrub.

Kelsey, for a while I had to turn the phone to landsc ape when I
changed pages. Eventually I got the hang of it and I could change
pages without doing that. My guess is this will eventually be true for you.

Hello,
I can’t seem to get the phone to recognize the scrub when using a back
and forth motion, but I did get it to work when I turned the phone to
landscape mode and did it up and down. I guess I’ll just have to turn
the phone sideways when I need to use the scrub gesture. Kind of a
pain to remember each time, but it is what it is. I only use landscape
mode for certain things and this may be one of them.

All I do is place two fingers on the screen slightly apart, then
scrub left right left, or is it right left right. It works almost every
time.

Hi Jeannette,
I hik for now I’m going to stick with using the back button since I
can’t get the scrub to work consistently. If I can get someone to
show me how to do the gesture, I’ll use it, but for now, the back
button is going to b my best option.

It's an issue with how you're scrubbing. When you scrub keep your
fingers on the phone. When you flick right or left or up and down
your fingers come up off the phone.

Hi Jeannette,
Well I guess I’ll have to use the back button since I can’t get the
gesture to work. My phone thinks I’m flicking when I do the scrub
gesture. My old phone did the same thing, so I’m thinking it’s an
issue with how I’m holdig my hand.

If you think about the dots on a slate and stylus, you would do
dots one and four, then do a diagonal down to dot three, and go to
dot six. If that doesn't work, just do a line up and a line down,
very short, not much pressure. Again, if that doesn't work, just go to
the "back"
button.

Hi Jeannette,
I’m net sure what a print Z looks like. Can you try and describe it
in terms of a braille cell? That secmed to help me when I was
learning to write my signature.

You're working way too hard. Sometimes scrubbing just doesn't work
and using the "back" button is more efficient. That being said,
consider the following. Make sure your hands are not too cold and
that there is no extra junk on your screen (bits of stuff, or even a
drop of water).
Use two fingers, and my husband and I have done gestures sort of
like a print Z, or up and down. I usually try it once or twice,
but if it doesn't work and I can go back, I just use the "back"
button. Also,, keeping your touch lighter as you move your two fingers
may help.

Subject: [vibug-support] Two Finger Scrub
Sent from my iPhone
Hello,
I would have brought this up at the last meeting, but
unfortunately I was out of town and wasn’t able to join.
Therefore, I was hoping someone could offer some suggestions. I am
strugling with the two finger scrub gesture on IOS. The only way
I’m successful with it is to shake my whole hand back and forth
which makes my wrist sore after a while. When I have my braille
display handy, I usually just do a b chord to activate the back
button, but if I don’t have it handy, I resort to finding and
double tapping the back button. Does anyone have any suggestions
on how I can do the scrub gesture that doesn’t involve shaking my
wrist? I understand my wrist will move a little, but I shouldn’t have to
shake my entire hand to do thh gesture.
Kind Regards,
Kelsey Nicolay***
