David, do the following.
After starting nvda, go in to the nvda menu with insert plus the letter n.
Then arrow down to the preferences menu and press enter.
Arrow down to the keyboard menu and press enter.
Tabe to the "speak command keys" checkbox and check it.
That should do it.
