Hello Mo,

I thought that a little more background might prove helpful
in terms of where I am coming from with regard to backing up and restoring Windows systems.

For the last few years what I have been doing independently, as a blind person, with regard to backing up and restoring windows systems is as follows:

Using Windows XP Pro
using Acronis Trueimage to make backups and to restore images.
I used an old version of Trueimage which was just about usable
by simulating mouse functions with a screen reader.
Later versions of Trueimage were as far as I could tell, were completely unusable.
With the old version of Trueimage which I used
it was possible to backup images.
It was also possible to restore images independently undercertain conditions,
namely, as long as it was possible to boot up into windows,
I could use trueimage to set up a restore of a given image from an external drive.
Having obtained all the information the system would shut down,
boot into some kind of recovery environment,
restore the image and finally reboot into Windows automatically all without speech - somewhat nerve wracking.
However, I could not do this independently if the system could not boot up
and this is where your project comes in.

Given the big assumption that I could always boot up windows,
the sort of backup/restore set up I had was:
at the beginning of each month I would make a full backup.
Each future week in the month I would make an incremental backup.
At the beginning of the next month I would repeat the above.
This meant that I could keep several months worth of backup images
and I could restore to different points in a previous month is necessary.
It was also possible to mount an image (full backup or incremental backup)
so that it could be viewed as a drive using windows explorer
so I could view or retrieve any given files/folders as needed.
There were times when although I could boot into windows, something had gone wrong and I could not put it right and in those cases
I could restore to a previous system.

Does the environment with which we are experimenting
allow for the possibility of making incremental backups
and mounting images so that they can be viewed as drives?

Many thanks,,

Mike.
