hi. "blackmail"? that's kinda rough for such an inexpensive device. if
the ads popped up when reading a book, watching a movie or listening
to music, i would say wait a minute. but, this is different.
in fact, the current home screen is more user friendly than before the
newest os update.
before, the homescreen would have suggested apps, which you could
remove, but, the next time you booted they would appear again. getting
rid of that was a great move!
for a device that is not in the amazon environment, there are other
android tablets such as the samsung tab. i've even looked at them.
but, they cost quite a bit more than the $50 fire 7".
still, i might some day pick up one for a pure android tablet!

I seem to recall for an additional price this can be removed by amazon for
an already purchased fire. I suspect it is attached to one's fire
account which they change on their end.
