Hi Carol, David and all. I had my sighted daughter revisit this with
me. She was able to do the move and drop trick and then name a folder.
She did this for all apps except the few that I use daily.
I then went on my own and tried to do some of this stuff. There was no
voice-view feedback when I moved these apps. So, unless there is some
magic involved, the default is my daughter in this operation.
Unless I read otherwise, although I never thought of it this way
(smack me in the head), but, all of those icons on the home page are
considered to be shortcuts.
I was also able to open apps with Alexa as before, though they now are
in a folder.

You are basically correct. Select mode does allow you to move files
from one place to another and to put them into new folders. This worked
very well for me shortly after I got my new 8" tablet. With the latest
update, I was not able to move files. This may also mean I forgot how to
do it and there may be nothing wrong with the tablet. One thing to
consider is that there is uaually a prompt near the top of the screen
that will give you options such as activate or delete. In those cases,
I don't think these particular items are available to be moved into
folders.
